The owls that choose to nest out in the open will usually use an old hawk, crow, raven, magpie or squirrel nest, which are in a tree, in a cactus or on a cliff ledge. Many owls, usually the smaller ones, nest in a natural cavity or an abandoned woodpecker hole. Barn owls may use hollow trees for nest sites, but will also nest on ledges in abandoned buildings, silos, water towers and barns. Burrowing owls nest in abandoned animal burrows and several species are attracted to manmade nest boxes.
